As we have seen, the nakshatras play a significant role in shaping our destinies. Among these 27 lunar mansions, Ardra Nakshatra stands out as a symbol of emotional depth and creative resilience. Governed by the fierce deity Rudra, it carries a transformative energy that dismantles and rebuilds, often through intense experiences. This nakshatra blends the power of destruction with the healing potential, making it a crucible for growth and renewal. Within its storm lies the spark of creativity, forging strength through upheaval.

Ardra, the sixth nakshatra, is located entirely within the zodiac sign of Gemini. It spans from 6°40' to 20°00' in Gemini.

The Myth

Ardra Nakshatra is deeply tied to the myth of Rudra, the fierce and stormy aspect of Lord Shiva. According to Vedic mythology, Rudra’s tears gave birth to this nakshatra, embodying both sorrow and the renewal that follows. As a deity of storms and upheaval, Rudra represents the necessity of destruction as a precursor to creation and healing.

This myth highlights the transformative essence of Ardra Nakshatra. Just as Rudra’s tears cleanse and reset the cosmos, those born under this nakshatra often experience profound personal transformations. Through life’s trials, they shed the past, emerging stronger, wiser, and renewed.

The Basics

Mrigashira spans from 23°20' Taurus to 6°40' Gemini. This means, depending on your Moon’s exact degree, you might fall into either Taurus or Gemini. Naturally, Mrigashira in Taurus expresses itself with a receptive yet steadfast energy, whereas in Gemini, it adopts a more active and agile quality.

The Myth

As we've already established, the key to truly understanding how Nakshatras manifest in reality lies in becoming familiar with the myths associated with them.

The myth connected with Mrigashira involves Daksha, the son of Brahma. Daksha organized a grand yajna (ritual), intentionally excluding Shiva—his daughter Sati's husband—whom he deeply despised. Despite Shiva’s disapproval, Sati attended the ritual, only to face severe insults aimed at both herself and Shiva. Unable to bear the humiliation, Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire. When Shiva learned of Sati’s tragic end, his fury was uncontrollable, and he destroyed Daksha’s ritual. Yagya, the presiding sage, transformed himself into a deer in an attempt to escape Shiva’s wrath. However, Shiva caught and killed him. The deer’s head became the Mrigashira Nakshatra, symbolizing the essence of sacrifice.

Symbolism

While mythologically Mrigashira is associated with sacrifice, the word Mrigashira translates to "deer’s head." In ancient cultures, understanding deeper meanings often involves looking directly at what a word represents in connection with its symbol.

Across many traditions, including ancient Indian culture, deer symbolize gentleness, innocence, sensitivity, intuition, agility, a deep connection to nature, and the continual search for knowledge. Picture deer in the wild, always appearing to be seeking something—this captures precisely the energy of Mrigashira.

Rulerships

As usual, let’s break things down using our familiar categories, helping us better understand how different rulerships shape the manifestation of Mrigashira:

• Rulership of the Nakshatra itself: Mrigashira is ruled by Mars, a planet associated with courage, strength, ambition, passion, assertiveness, and the drive to succeed. Mars, a masculine planet connected with the fire element, governs action and our capacity to initiate and make things happen.

• Rulership through the zodiac signs it occupies: Depending on its exact degree, Mrigashira can fall either in Taurus or Gemini, significantly influencing how it manifests. Let’s begin talking about Rohini.

The Basics

Rohini nakshatra lies entirely within Taurus. To be specific 10°40’ — 23°20’ Taurus (sidereal).

The Myth

The myth of Rohini is deeply intertwined with the creation of the 27 Nakshatras and their shadow side. The story goes like this:

Brahma, the creator, brought forth ten divine beings to assist in shaping the universe. One of them, Daksha, fathered 60 daughters, 27 of whom became the Nakshatras. As a gesture of divine order, these Nakshatras were given as consorts to the Moon-god.

The Moon was meant to spend one day with each of his celestial wives, moving through them in a rhythmic cycle. But among them all, Rohini captivated him the most—with her beauty, charm, and grace. Enchanted, he lingered in her presence far longer than with the others. What was supposed to be an equal division of time became an imbalanced devotion, as the Moon repeatedly favored Rohini over the rest.

Jealousy brewed among the other 26 Nakshatras. Feeling neglected, they turned to Brahma and Daksha, pleading for justice. In response, a curse was placed upon the Moon—forcing him to wax and wane, fading and growing, as he moved through each Nakshatra in turn.

If you haven’t already guessed, this myth is an elegant allegory for the lunar cycle over the course of a month.

Symbolism

Rohini translates to ‘the red one,’ ‘blushing bride,’ or ‘the arouser,’ all evoking themes of sensuality, fertility, and passion. No matter how it's interpreted, the essence of Rohini remains deeply tied to procreation, attraction, and creative energy.

Its ruling deity, Brahma, the Creator, further reinforces its connection to creativity, manifestation, and the generative forces of life.

From the myth we explored earlier, Rohini carries these distinct associations:

• The Moon’s favoritism toward Rohini - Symbolizing charm, beauty, and irresistible attraction

• The jealousy of the other Nakshatras - Highlighting Rohini’s ability to provoke desire and envy

Rohini's energy is one of magnetism, creation, and deep emotional currents, making it one of the most alluring and dynamic Nakshatras in the zodiac.

Rulerships

Now that we’ve explored the symbols and myths of Rohini, let’s take a closer look at its rulership.

As always, we can break it down into two key layers:

• Nakshatra Rulership – Rohini is ruled by the Moon, which governs emotions, home, belonging, motherhood, and family. This gives Rohini a deeply nurturing, sentimental, and emotionally rich quality.

However, the conjunction of Rahu with the Moon intensifies Rohini’s influence, making its manifestation tumultuous and complex—often with darker undertones. If they are an artist, they may be drawn to art that explores suffering. If they are an actor, they may frequently be cast in roles that depict intense, unstable, or psychologically complex characters. Yet, they will excel in such portrayals, as Rahu amplifies the creative energy of Rohini, giving them a powerful artistic edge.

Since the ruler of the 10th house, Venus, is placed in the 11th house conjunct Mercury in Gemini, this person will have a natural talent for wit, provocation, and sarcasm. The creative genius of Rohini fuses with Mercury’s intellect and sharp humor, allowing them to be brilliantly expressive and provocative in their craft. Given the strong link between the 10th and 11th houses, their creativity and communication skills will likely play a significant role in shaping their public career and influence.

The third Nakshatra in this series is Krittika. Interestingly, Krittika was originally considered the very first Nakshatra in Classical Vedic astrology. We’ll set aside the technical reasons behind that for now—no need to get lost in the mechanics just yet.

Now, let’s continue on to the third Nakshatra — Krittika.

The Basics

Unlike the previous two Nakshatras we explored, Krittika spans across both Aries and Taurus. It stretches from 26°40' Aries to 10°00' Taurus (sidereal).

This means that, depending on the exact degree of your Moon, you could either fall under Aries or Taurus. Naturally, Krittika in Aries expresses itself quite differently from Krittika in Taurus—each placement brings its unique qualities and energies.

The Myth

Several myths are associated with Krittika, but one of the most prominent involves the demon Taraka and the warrior god Kartikeya.

The story goes like this:

The demon Taraka was blessed by Brahma, the creator, with a seemingly invincible boon—only a seven-day-old son of Shiva could defeat him. However, Shiva was deep in ascetic meditation in the Himalayas, with no intention of having a child.

Determined to overcome this obstacle, the gods devised a plan. They sent Kamadeva, the god of love and desire, to awaken Shiva’s passion. When Shiva’s divine seed was finally obtained, it was carried to Earth by Agni, the god of fire.

The seed was then nurtured by six Krittikas—divorced wives of ancient sages—who each gave birth to a son. These six infants were later embraced by Parvati, Shiva’s wife. Through her loving embrace, the six became one being with six heads and twelve arms, embodying the unity of their origins. Thus, Kartikeya was born.

At just seven days old, Kartikeya fulfilled the prophecy by vanquishing the demon Taraka.

Symbolism

The name Krittika has deep symbolic roots. The Sanskrit word "Krit" means to cut or divide, while "tika" translates to challenge. Together, Krittika embodies the essence of cutting, dividing, challenging, or splitting apart. This is why it’s often symbolized by sharp objects—knives, blades, or razors—tools that represent precision, discernment, and the ability to separate the essential from the non-essential. As a result, Krittika is also linked to being critical, analytical, and incisive.

Beyond its literal meaning, the myth we discussed earlier adds deeper layers to Krittika’s symbolism:

• Agni (Fire) - Since Agni, the god of fire, carried Shiva’s divine seed to Earth, Krittika inherits the fiery essence of purification, transformation, and initiation. In ancient times, fire was central to life—it led processions in the dark, preceded armies in battle, and was the first element kindled during rituals and ceremonies. Fire symbolizes the spark that initiates action, whether it be warfare, group movements, or spiritual rites. In this spirit, Krittika is often seen as the initiator or catalyst, driving progress and transformation.

• Mars - Kartikeya, the warrior god, was born through the combined energies of Shiva, Agni, and the nurturing embrace of the Krittikas—the ‘divorced’ wives of ancient sages. Known as the child of fire and the warrior god, Kartikeya embodies courage, discipline, and martial prowess. This links Krittika to the fiery, assertive qualities of Mars, the planet of action, aggression, and strategy.

Rulerships

Now that we’ve explored the mythology and symbolism of Krittika, let’s look into its rulerships.

Since Krittika spans both Aries and Taurus, we need to examine two sets of rulerships—one for the Aries section and another for the Taurus section. Following the same framework from our previous posts, there are two layers of rulership to consider:

Rulership of the Nakshatra Itself - Krittika is ruled by the Sun, the celestial body symbolizing strength, leadership, authority, vitality, and ambition. The Sun’s energy is both nurturing and fierce—essential for life, yet potentially destructive if its intensity becomes overwhelming. This rulership reflects Krittika’s core qualities of brilliance, decisiveness, and the power to illuminate or burn, depending on proximity and balance.

Rulership of the Zodiac Sign Placement

The influence of Krittika also depends on where it falls within the zodiac in one’s chart:

• If placed in Aries:
  The first three padas (quarters) of Krittika lie in Aries, a sign ruled by Mars. Mars embodies courage, action, assertiveness, and the fiery energy of a warrior. When Krittika resides in Aries, its cutting and decisive nature takes on a dynamic, bold, and action-driven quality, making individuals more daring, energetic, and pioneering.

• If placed in Taurus:
  The final pada of Krittika lies in Taurus, governed by Venus. Venus represents material wealth, pleasure, beauty, sensuality, and luxury. In Taurus, Krittika’s fiery energy becomes more refined, steady, and focused on stability, material success, and comfort. Here, the cutting quality is applied more toward refinement, patience, and cultivating abundance.

Now that we’ve explored the mythology, symbolism, and rulerships of Krittika, let’s bring it all together to understand how this Nakshatra can manifest in a person’s life and character.

To recap, Krittika embodies the following associations:

1. Agni (The God of Fire):
   Represents initiation, transformation, and the role of a catalyst—sparking new beginnings or changes with intensity and purpose.

2. Kartikeya (The Warrior God):
   Symbolizes passion, protection, defense, and destruction of obstacles—an embodiment of disciplined strength and strategic action.

3. Sharp Objects (Blades, Knives, Razors):
   Reflects the power of separation, cutting through illusions, challenges, sharp thinking, discernment, and constructive criticism.

4. The Sun (Nakshatra Ruler):
   Denotes authority, leadership, vitality, ambition, and personal power—offering both warmth and the potential for intensity or dominance.

5. Mars (If Placed in Aries):
   Infuses courage, bravery, assertiveness, dynamic energy, and the spirit of a warrior ready for action and conflict.

6. Venus (If Placed in Taurus):
   Emphasizes wealth, material prosperity, sensuality, pleasure, beauty, and luxury—grounding Krittika’s fiery nature with stability and indulgence.

What would it look like if the moon was placed in Krittika, in Aries?

Since the Moon represents one’s inner world, mind, and emotions, having the Moon in Krittika within Aries can shape someone into a sharp and critical thinker—sometimes to the point of being overly critical. If left unchecked, their passion for what they care about can manifest as aggression or intensity in their communication.

These are the individuals you want by your side when inspiration and energy are needed. They excel at motivating others, sparking change, and taking decisive action. However, their directness and intensity might make them less suitable in situations that require gentleness, empathy, or emotional subtlety. They are the warriors who speak out, challenge the status quo, and push for transformation but often struggle with offering emotional softness or compassionate language.

This heightened intensity arises from the fiery combination of the Sun’s radiance and Mars’ passion in Aries. Their energy can be overwhelming in calm or emotionally sensitive environments but becomes invaluable in moments that demand boldness, leadership, and the courage to initiate change.

As we’ve seen, Krittika in Aries tends to be a harsh critic, delivering feedback with bluntness and intensity. In contrast, Krittika in Taurus still carries that sharpness but tempers it with diplomacy and tact. The fiery sharpness of the Sun is softened by the balance, grace, and stability of Venus, allowing critiques to be delivered with a sense of refinement and emotional sensitivity.

While the drive to challenge and refine remains strong, individuals with this placement are more likely to express their insights thoughtfully—aiming for harmony and constructive feedback rather than confrontation.

Generally speaking, this person would be:

• Intelligent, has leadership qualities, determined, has a strong sense of purpose, and critical.

• 11th House Influence - Since the Moon is placed in the 11th house of Community, Social Networks, and Long Term Desires, they would likely be involved in some form of philanthropy and would be driven toward their desires and goals.

• Taurus Rulership and Venusian Influence - Since the ruler of Taurus is Venus, and Venus is placed in the 9th House of Philosophy and Travel and is also closely associated with Mercury in the same house, along with the Sun, the ruler of Krittika, they would likely be a traveler, and interested in other cultures and philosophies.

• Rahu and Mars in the 10th House - With both Rahu (ambition and obsession) and Mars (drive and action) placed in the 10th house of career and the public sphere, this individual is likely to be a public figure—potentially an artist, activist, or influencer. They could be recognized for their bold, outspoken stance on social issues and their active involvement in philanthropy.

Let’s continue our journey through the Nakshatras!

If you have not yet read my first two posts on the topic, I recommend that you do so before you continue with this post.

In this post, we continue our exploration by focusing on Bharani, the second Nakshatra.

The Basics

Bharani lies entirely within the sidereal sign of Aries, spanning 13°20′ to 26°40′. Because it occupies the heart of Aries, Bharani carries the energetic imprint of Mars, the planetary ruler of Aries. However, Bharani also has a specific Nakshatra ruler: Venus. This dual influence shapes Bharani’s core nature.

The Myth

As we established in a previous post, understanding the myth associated with each Nakshatra is essential to knowing what each Nakshatra means. The myth for Bharani picks up where the Ashwini myth left off.

Remember the story of Surya (the Sun), his wife Sanjana, and the shadow wife Chaya? Here’s how it continues:

Yama, the god of death, is born to Surya and Sanjana. Unable to endure the Sun’s heat, Sanjana creates Chaya—her own shadow—to take her place and then flees. Surya, unaware that he’s living with a shadow, has three children with Chaya.

Naturally, Chaya loves her own children but does not show the same affection for Yama. This disparity causes a dispute between Yama and Chaya and ultimately leads Surya to discover that he has been living with a shadow wife. He then departs to search for the real Sanjana.

Yama, now on earth, becomes the first mortal to die and is eventually granted the role of god of death.

Yama, the god of death is associated with the Bharani Nakshatra and is regarded as the deity personifying its energy.

Keep that in mind—we’ll return to it later!

Symbolism

Bharani is symbolized by the Yoni (the vulva), representing the feminine creative principle—birth, sexuality, nourishment, and transformation. Its association with Yama adds the complementary theme of death. Together, birth and death form a cycle of continual rebirth and profound transformation. This Nakshatra’s essential nature is understood to be about balancing creation and dissolution, birth and death.

Rulerships

So far we have looked at the myth and symbolisms associated with Bharani. Before we start to put these together to see what Bharani reveals, let’s take a moment to discuss rulerships.

To understand Bharani’s layers, consider both its Nakshatra ruler (Venus) and its sign ruler (Mars):

1. Venus (Nakshatra Ruler): Typically symbolizes material wealth, beauty, sensuality, creativity, fertility, and spirituality.

2. Mars (Sign Ruler, since Bharani lies in Aries): Implies courage, action, passion, aggression, and raw energy.

Putting it All Together

We know that Bharani is,

• #1 — associated with Yama, the god of death — signifying death and transformation.

• #2 — associated with Yoni (Vulva) — birth, life, sexuality, and creativity.

• #3 — associated with Venus — wealth, prosperity, sexuality, potency, pleasure, beauty, luxury and spirituality.

• #4 — associated with Mars — courage, aggression, bravery, action, energy

So what could it look like when you have your Moon placed in Bharani Nakshatra?

We established that the moon signifies your mind and emotions — your inner world. This is how you perceive the world from within.

What’s notable about Bharani from what we have discussed so far is that it signifies death and life at the same time. It’s a Nakshatra of transformation. If you have your Moon in Bharani, you would likely be someone who would have had many death-like situations throughout life. This doesn’t mean it’s literal near-death — but rather, significant endings and beginnings that lead towards transformation.

If we are to imagine a formula that could illustrate what the moon in Bharani could manifest, we get something like this:

Moon, your inner self, merges the passion and drive of Mars with the sensuality, beauty, and creativity of Venus. Whenever Mars and Venus come together, they ignite a special ‘spark’—in relationships, we call this ‘chemistry.’ If you have Bharani in your natal Moon, that spark arises within you!

Under this combined influence, you’re likely to be sensual, creative, and drawn to sexuality and luxury. Though Bharani Moon natives may desire wealth, they often seek it to share with or uplift others. Depending on which house hosts your Moon, these themes may surface more intensely in different areas of your life.

Think back to the symbolism we explored: the Vulva (life) and Yama (death). Alongside the Mars–Venus blend, this can stir powerful sexual desires that, for various reasons, you may feel compelled to suppress or renounce. In certain situations, this ‘death’ or rejection of desire spurs a more ascetic outlook in life.

Because Bharani weaves both masculine (Mars) and feminine (Venus) energies into one, it holds immense creative potential for those born under its influence.

A Quick Example

This is an example of a chart that shows the Moon placed in Aries, in Bharani Nakshatra, in the 3rd house.

The general profile of this person would indicate that they are:

• sensual, creative, courageous, attractive, and charismatic

• since the Moon is placed in the 3rd House of Communication, their focus in life would likely be around things of communication and media. This could mean that they are a writer, a poet, a lyricist, etc.

• Since the ruler of Aries is Mars, and Mars is placed in the 11th House of Community and Social Networks and rules over the 10th House of Public Life, this person will likely be a public figure. Given the presence of Uranus in the 10 House very close to Venus, it could also indicate they would likely have risen to fame suddenly.

• Considering the placements that we just looked at, along with the connection to Mars and Venus, and their connections to the 10th House here, this person would likely be a media figure — likely a singer/dancer.

Conclusion

Bharani encapsulates the mysteries of life and death, uniting sensual Venusian influences with Martian vigor. If your Moon is in Bharani, you may find yourself repeatedly recreating and reinventing your life, often through experiences that challenge your comfort zone.

• Embrace: Creativity, sensuality, and a capacity to transform difficulties into personal evolution.

• Be Wary Of: Overindulgence, impulsivity, or a tendency to repress powerful emotions only to have them resurface.

Use astrology as a tool to illuminate your unconscious patterns rather than as a rigid map of destiny.

Let’s begin our journey through the Nakshatras!

If you have not yet read my first two posts on the topic, I recommend doing so before continuing with this post.

We will begin with the first Nakshatra — Ashwini 🐴!

The Basics

Ashwini Nakshatra lies entirely within the zodiac sign of Aries (Sidereal), specifically spanning from 0° to 13°20' Aries. This means that Aries' inherent qualities shape Ashwini’s essence.

Keep that in mind! We will get back to this later!

The Myth

As I mentioned in my previous post, we cannot fully grasp what each Nakshatra represents without knowing the myth they are associated with. The Myth of Ashwini is quite interesting!

It goes something like this:

Surya, the Sun, was married to Sanjana. She loved him very much, but he was too bright and hot, that she could not bear to be near him. So she created a ‘shadow wife’ that looks just like her and runs away. The Sun continued to live with the shadow wife, not knowing that was not his actual wife — Sanjana!

Some time later Sanjana regrets her actions and attempts to return to him. But it was too late! Surya (Sun) had fallen in love with the Shadow wife!

But, Sanjana doesn’t give up! She’s determined to win him over. So she turns herself into a mare and grazes only on dry grass so that she can one day withstand the Sun’s heat. The Sun learns after a while that he is living with the Shadow wife and attempts to find Sanjana. To win her over again, he turns himself into a Horse and reconnects with her.

The Sun and Sanjana copulating as horses result in Sanjana giving birth to twins — Ashwini Kumaras.

Symbolism

The Sanskrit word Ashwini translates to “horse”, and Ashwini Kumaras means “horse possessors”.

Horses symbolize:

• Energy

• Swiftness

• Freedom

• Competition

• Confidence

• Beauty

In the Vedic myths, The Ashwini Kumaras, are known to be celestial physicians and also symbolize healing, rejuvenation, and quick action.

Rulerships

In Astrology, we usually speak about rulerships. I won’t get much into the technicalities behind these for now.

When it comes to rulerships of Nakshatras we want to consider two things:

• Rulership of the Nakshatra itself — Ashwini is said to be ruled by Ketu — the south node of the Moon. Ketu is generally associated with unfinished karma, or in personal terms, a sense of lack or an area of life where you may have unconscious wisdom, but yet need to give much attention to. Ketu is also said to be what you came to this incarnation with, while Rahu, the north node, is associated with what you’re headed towards in this lifetime.

• Rulership of the Zodiac Sign where the Nakshatra is placed — We already established that Ashwini lies fully in the zodiac sign Aries. Aries is ruled by Mars. Mars, in most mythologies around the world, is associated with courage, bravery, action, energy, and war.

Putting it All Together

So far we have looked at some of the key building blocks of understanding how Ashwini could manifest. Before we move further, let’s recap what this Nakshatra is associated with. We know that Ashwini is,

• #1 — associated with Horses — energy, swiftness, freedom, competition, confidence, and beauty

• #2 — associated with Ketu — unfinished karma, a sense of lack

• #3 — associated with Mars — courage, aggression, bravery, action, energy

So what could it look like when you have your Moon placed in Ashwini Nakshatra?

The Moon is your mind and emotions — your inner world. It’s how you see and perceive the world from within. It’s your deep psycho-spiritual self.

When your moon is in Ashwini, it can give you inner drive, courage, and energy. Specifically, depending on the house in which your moon is placed, that specific area can be a deeply emotional part of your life.

But…here’s the caveat! Where your moon is, there is where your deep emotional entanglements lie. Putting this together, if we are to imagine a formula, we get something like this:

So, if you have your Moon placed in Ashwini, the influence of Mars on your Moon will likely make you a driven, energetic person, but that drive will come from a deeply emotional place. You may have aggressive emotional outbursts.

You can be described as headstrong, intelligent, full of energy, dynamic, and having a thirst for life. You could also be seen as childlike and having a constant craving for independence.

The energy of Ketu can cause you to feel as if you are always searching for the next thing — and if left without care for your mental health, this can cause you to be discontent with life itself over time.

How is this useful anyway?

We would be missing the point if we only use astrology to quench our thirst for the Mystical but don’t draw any practical, helpful insights that can aid us in living a grounded life.

Astrology, while an esoteric and mystical technology, is also simply a science of pattern recognition. The benefit of identifying our patterns is to interrupt them when necessary and foster them at other times.

Patterns you would want to interrupt are your emotional overwhelm that can result in angry outbursts, your sense of discontent by reminding yourself of the goodness in your life and that life ebbs and flows, and your tendency to overplay your desire for freedom.

Patterns you can foster are your passion and drive for action and getting things done, your quick and intelligent mind that can come up with ideas with ease, your unrelenting courage, and your drive to expand beyond what was given to you.

A Quick Example

Let’s see what this can look like on a birth chart.

A quick disclaimer: This is a general analysis. While this can give you some pointers in understanding yourself, it’s important to remember you need to consider the entire chart for a holistic understanding.

This is an example of a chart that shows the Moon placed in Aries, in Ashwini Nakshatra, the 11th house.

The general profile of this person would indicate that they are:

• Headstrong, intelligent, full of energy, has a quick mind, and dynamic.

• Since the Moon is placed in the 11th House of Community and Social Networks, their focus in life will likely revolve around public spaces.

• Since the ruler of Aries is Mars, and Mars is placed in the 2nd House of Values and Speech and also rules over the 6th House of Conflicts and Service, this person will likely be involved in matters of value — such as Law, Policy, Assets, etc. and/or things requiring them to use their voice — specifically speech.

• The connection to the 6th House would also indicate an involvement with service and/or conflict resolution-focused work.

• Since the Moon is in Ashwini Nakshatra, and Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, the south node of the Moon, this person will likely have a sense of needing to accomplish more throughout their life.

If we consider all this together, having Ashwini Moon in the 11th House, could likely be a person who is,

• an advocate for social justice

• who is service-oriented

• intelligent, sharp, and quick-minded

• likely an intellectual

• has a desire for freedom

• has ample energy to work diligently towards their goals

• community builder

• headstrong and courageous

• public speaker

Conclusion

I hope this series is of value to you in understanding yourself and also navigating your interpersonal relationships.

Keep one thing in mind though! Use Astrology only as a tool to make the unconscious conscious, and never as a blueprint of your fate!

Use it to foster patterns that need to be fostered in you, and interrupt the ones that do not serve you well in the long run!

The Power of Myth in Understanding Nakshatras

Before we embark on our journey through the 27 Nakshatras—astronomically known as asterisms—and how they can offer insights into our lives and the lives of those around us, we must first explore the foundational technology upon which all astrology is built: Myth.

In the modern world, the word myth is often equated with fiction or fantasy, but the ancients saw it differently. Myths were not mere stories; they were vehicles for truth—truth that was not merely intellectual but experientially known. Joseph Campbell, the renowned scholar of comparative mythology, beautifully captures this in his book The Power of Myth:

In the Vedic tradition, mythology plays a central role in astrology. The grahas (often translated as planets) are not just celestial bodies; they are divine agents—avatars of Vishnu—executing the will of the cosmic intelligence. The Sanskrit word graha means "that which absorbs" or "receives," which is far more nuanced than the English term planet.

The Cosmic Framework: Grahas, Nakshatras, and the Zodiac

Most people are familiar with their zodiac sign, which can be determined using either the tropical or sidereal system. But beyond the zodiac lies a more intricate and ancient framework—the Nakshatras.

Think of the Nakshatras as distinct realms, each with its own unique nature, blessings, and challenges. As the grahas move through the sky, they pass over these Nakshatras, absorbing their qualities. This imprint is then projected through the zodiac signs, which serve as the constellations through which we interpret their influence.

In Vedic Astrology, just as each graha has a mythic story, each Nakshatra also carries its own mythology. The overarching myth tells us that the 27 Nakshatras are the wives of the Moon. Each of these celestial wives has a unique relationship with the Moon, and their stories provide profound insight into the nature of the Nakshatras themselves.

The Focus of This Series: Your Janma Nakshatra

While every planetary Nakshatra placement in a birth chart has significance, this series will focus specifically on your Janma Nakshatra—the Nakshatra in which the Moon was placed at the moment of your birth.

As we explore each Nakshatra, pay close attention to the myths associated with them. These myths hold the primary keys to understanding how each Nakshatra manifests in life.

One theme we will return to again and again is the primacy of Myth—not as a relic of the past, but as an active force shaping our perception, our destiny, and our connection to the cosmos.

Find Your Moon’s Nakshatra

If you don’t yet know your Moon’s Nakshatra, now is a great time to find out. Many astrology websites and apps can provide this information for free. My personal favorite is the Cosmic Insights app, which offers an easy way to create a profile and follow along with this series.

Let’s begin.

There was an article that circulated widely a few years ago that claimed that astrology had infiltrated work culture. I found it fascinating that the decline in organized religion is somehow driving millennials and the post-millennial generation toward esoteric practices such as Astrology. Truth be told, at the time I read that article first, I didn’t care about astrology at all. What I was exposed to in the recent past has been what I would now refer to as ‘pop astrology’, which can feel like caricatures of people created based on their ‘star signs’, which can be entertaining, but not really helpful.

Not soon after that, various events led me to re-look at astrology out of curiosity. This sent me down a rabbit hole of research, reading, and courses to understand what the hell this was.

As I was reading about various interpretations and modalities in astrology, I was drawn to the form of astrology that’s closely related to my ancestral lineage — Vedic Astrology. This is the Astrological system developed in India and is thousands of years old. Before the development of the Tropical Zodiac system which is popular in culture today, the Sidereal Zodiac took center stage.

Historically speaking, Western astrology suffered much persecution because of the Christianization of Rome in the early 4th century, when it was deemed illegal and astrologers were persecuted as ‘pagans’. This led to Western astrology slowing down in its development over time. However, further east, Vedic astrology, based on the Lunar-based calendar, was accepted as a science by the Eastern Monarchy and was given a legitimate place in society, including government. This led to constant development and advancement of the system itself, and over time it became quite robust.

While in mainstream society, Sun sign astrology, based on the tropical solar calendar, is popular, Vedic astrology is hardly known. One of the fascinating aspects of this system is Nakshatras — the 28 lunar mansions. Ever since I stumbled into it, it has continued to blow my mind.

In traditional Hindu culture, when a baby is born, parents would take the baby to see a priest at the temple. The priest would then ask the parents what the ‘jenma nakshatra (birth star)’ of the child was. Jenma Nakshatra is the Lunar mansion in which the moon was the day and time the baby was born. Based on this, the priest would then draw the birth chart of the child.

While the Jenma Nakshatra (birth star), would not necessarily give all the ins and outs of a person’s life, it provides a psycho-spiritual outlook of a person’s intimate aspects of their personality. It also aids in understanding the timing of key events in a person’s life.

This brings me to this series. I intend on sharing my learnings and thoughts on various aspects of Vedic astrology — specifically with an emphasis on the Nakshatras — the lunar mansions.
